From: George Washington & Rachel Roper
To: (son) Washington and Fanny
State of ILLs., Saline County
August the 1, 1865
My Deare st Son and daughter, I have pleasure this morning of answering your kind letter, receive yesterday. We are all Well, the conection is all well as far an in our Carrol, wife is very sick, and Carrol left home last march and went into the army.
Dave told me this morning to write to you, Him and Fanny, myself and your mother would be out there in September, Dave say's tell you, he had world's of corn and so much wheat, he did not have nowhere to put it.
We have had a letter from Jet Simmon's he is move to Indiana, Gibson county. Rachel sands her love and beat respect's to all her conection, hug and kiss you, all your little children, for we tell them to be good children, love little Betty's soul, don't grieve after her, for you know your loss is her eternal gain.
Wash, look out for James or Lewis will be there in a few days, I do hope when I hear from you all again, Fanny will be up and about, I think it has been on my mind ever since I heard of the death of little Betty, about you trying to learn her to dance, when you was here. I want her death to be a warning to you, and for you to turn your course, and be, and do better.
Seth and Polly is talking of coming out there, before long. We all want to be remembered to Dowel and his wife. Rachel ses tell Susan, she wants to see her and Colin so bad, but say's if she never see's you all, she hope's she will meet you in a better world, then this, where we no more take the parting. We will hear of no more wars, then the last account we had from George, he was at Mobile, George looks very well.
We still remain your true and affectionate father and mother until death.
Write just as soon as you get this letter.
